2022 Rebate Outlook

The commercial market lighting rebate outlook for 2022 is even stronger than 2021, with relatively stable, substantial rebates promoting adoption of energy-efficient lighting and controls.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published the 2022 Electrical Standards & Products Guide (ESPG), which is the electroindustry’s go-to resource for 1,000 standards and technical documents, product categories, and the manufacturers of those products. This year’s edition features 20 new documents published in 2021.

Matt Ochs, senior director of commercial business for Lutron Electronics, recently contributed an article to BUILDINGS Magazine talking about how lighting controls can support the return to the office, either fully occupied or in a hybrid office-home office model.

“With NEMA’s latest guidance on 0-10V control wire colors, I want to dust off an old question: Should the control wires be run in the same conduit as the line voltage wires?”asks C. Webster Marsh.

Designing with Lighting Controls

In 2020, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) published ANSI/IES LP-6-20, Lighting Control Systems: Properties, Selection, and Specification. Drawing on the Lighting Controls Association’s Education Express offering as a primary source, this 111-page Lighting Practice and American National Standard provides an excellent foundation for designing with lighting control systems.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published NEMA LS 20003-2021 Standby Power Measurements for LED Drivers—Recommended Allowances for Feature Sets Other Than Lighting. This new white paper recommends standby power allowances, based on available features, for regulators to consider when setting limits on LED driver standby power. It was developed along with the test procedures contained in ANSI C82.16 and should be read together with it.

Daintree® Networked wireless lighting controls from GE Current, a Daintree company, are now a DesignLights Consortium® (DLC®) Qualified Networked Lighting Controls Product, giving lighting designers and building owners a tested and certified full-featured lighting controls option for commercial and industrial environments.

Steve Mesh Talks Control Zoning

In designing and specifying a lighting control system, part of the work involves configuring control zones to meet code requirements. This is an incredibly important step for two reasons…

According to the AIA Construction Consensus Forecast Panel of leading economic forecasters, nonresidential building construction spending is expected to expand 5.4% in 2022 and strengthen to a 6.1% expansion in 2023.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published Automatic Receptacle Control—Manufacturer Best Practice Checklist Technical Bulletin (NEMA HB 70000-2021). This best practice checklist guides manufacturers of automatic receptacle control wiring devices and systems (commonly called plug load control) to achieve successful installation, good end-user experience, and maximized energy efficiency with the technology deployment.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published American National Standard for Lighting Equipment—LED Drivers Robustness (ANSI C82.15-2021), which applies to hardware and microcontroller and microprocessor-based LED drivers. This American National Standard describes testing methods used to evaluate LED drivers’ robustness or their ability to withstand the specific stresses.

The nLight® IECC 2021 applications guide is designed to support compliance with commercial building energy codes based on the 2021 version of the International Energy Conservation Code, or IECC.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Energy Measurement for a Network Lighting Control (NLC) Device with a Locking-Type Receptacle (ANSI C136.50-2021). This is a new Standard that describes methods and requirements for the measurement of energy consumption and the reporting of the consumption for a network lighting control (NLC) device in an outdoor lighting application.

In the fall of 2021, the Lighting Controls Association (LCA) invited subscribers of lightingCONTROL, its monthly newsletter, to participate in a survey. The goal of the survey was to determine satisfaction with LCA services.

In this guest post, Jared Morello, VP of Specification Sales, Legrand North America, makes the case that secure lighting networking is achievable with the right compliance and certifications.

Acuity Brands, Inc. recently announced the private preview of Atrius® Building Manager, an end-to-end cloud solution that helps building owners and operators reduce operational costs, optimize energy usage, and improve occupant experiences, starting today with their lights. Atrius Building Manager integrates multiple capabilities to provide greater visibility, insight, fine-tuned control, and automation, at scale, for any commercial building type.

Leviton recently announced the appointment of Daryoush Larizadeh to Chief Executive Officer, effective as of December 1, 2021. Larizadeh will continue his responsibilities as President and COO, in addition to assuming the CEO role.

The International Trade Administration (ITA) announced the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) as one of its  grantees to expand U.S. participation in technical standards related to advanced manufacturing systems. Under its Market Development Cooperator Program, partnerships are established between ITA and non-profit industry groups for targeted projects that promote U.S. exports in international markets and remove, reduce, or prevent trade barriers.
