In 2023, the Lighting Controls Association (LCA) welcomed 180,000 visitors who viewed 600,000 pages on our website and Education Express. In the fall, the LCA invited subscribers of lightingCONTROL, our monthly newsletter, to participate in a satisfaction survey. Respondents were highly satisfied with all major site features, with Education Express topping the list.

NYControlled Registration Opens

NYControlled, the upcoming educational trade show for lighting control systems and products, will open its doors on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC for the inaugural event. Supported by the Lighting Controls Association, this much-awaited lighting controls event is now accepting registrations for both exhibitors and attendees.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) 2023 Integrated Lighting Campaign (ILC) recognized 11 organizations for exemplary commitment to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility in their buildings. Partners were recognized at the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) annual conference for projects that showcase how lighting system upgrades can lead to significant energy savings and create more comfortable, productive, and environmentally responsible spaces.

On December 17, 2022, NEMA Published, NEMA LS 20009-22, Controlled Emergency Lighting, a Technical Clarification Bulletin, available for free download. This Bulletin is intended to assist in the specification of devices used with emergency lighting that is controlled (dimming, switching, etc.) to satisfy the requirements of the applicable electrical and life safety codes.

NEMA Applauds Bipartisan SHIP It Act

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently applauded the bipartisan Safer Highways and Increased Performance for Interstate Trucking Act, or “SHIP IT Act,” introduced by Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA). The SHIP IT Act is a comprehensive piece of legislation aimed at addressing the pain points in the supply chain system, which has impacted the electroindustry’s ability to get products to market in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The Lighting Controls Association was founded as a council of NEMA back in 2001 to promote adoption of lighting controls through education. Today, the association continues to make a demonstrable difference in supporting public expertise in selecting, designing, installing, and operating lighting control systems. This article outlines the LCA’s accomplishments in 2022 and offers a preview of what’s to come in 2023.

This year’s edition features 20 new documents published in 2021. 

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published NEMA LS 20003-2021 Standby Power Measurements for LED Drivers—Recommended Allowances for Feature Sets Other Than Lighting. This new white paper recommends standby power allowances, based on available features, for regulators to consider when setting limits on LED driver standby power. It was developed along with the test procedures contained in ANSI C82.16 and should be read together with it.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published Automatic Receptacle Control—Manufacturer Best Practice Checklist Technical Bulletin (NEMA HB 70000-2021). This best practice checklist guides manufacturers of automatic receptacle control wiring devices and systems (commonly called plug load control) to achieve successful installation, good end-user experience, and maximized energy efficiency with the technology deployment.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published American National Standard for Lighting Equipment—LED Drivers Robustness (ANSI C82.15-2021), which applies to hardware and microcontroller and microprocessor-based LED drivers. This American National Standard describes testing methods used to evaluate LED drivers’ robustness or their ability to withstand the specific stresses.
