The Lighting Control Innovation Award was created in 2011 as part of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards program, which recognizes professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. The spatial organization, material palette and lighting design of this project reinforce Stifel’s leadership position in the investment industry and represent a balance of risk and opportunity, of the intuitive and the scientific. The use of stone and wood materials reflects the intuitive, while the use of glass, steel, advanced technology and sophisticated lighting reflects the scientific. The 22’-high elevator lobby vault is illuminated by eight c-shaped pendants with independently controlled up-and-down lighting components.
The existing penthouse floor’s signature characteristic, a series of 20 barrel-vaulted perimeter ceilings, is accentuated by an even wash of linear LED uplighting, recessed into the tops of furred-out walls along the spring line of the vaults.
A 117’-long angled, continuous LED fixture installation adds dramatic effect and guides visitors from the reception area to the boardroom.
Two rings of dimmable LED cove lighting and a number of radially-installed, recessed LED spokes illuminate the wood-panel ceiling outside the boardroom. The fully dimmable lighting is controlled by a zone-based addressable system. Each zone can be independently controlled by wall-mounted touchscreens or a user’s cell phone. Occupancy sensors are located in each space. The 3500K LED lamps possess excellent color rendition (85-90).
The backlit stretched-fabric boardroom ceiling with acoustical properties reinforces the geometry of the room and casts an even, glare- and shadow-free, low-wattage LED blanket of light over the 24-seat boardroom table. All lighting-, drapery- and monitor controls are accessible by tablet or occupant’s cell phone.
Natural light is modulated with motorized window treatments, recessed into the underside of stainless-steel light shelves. The window treatments are controlled with the lighting controller.
Energy efficiency and ease of maintenance are achieved with the LED lamps’ minimum LM70 life span of 50,000 hours and the scheme’s energy consumption, calculated at 1W/sq.ft.
